When the shy flower shop assistant Seymour comes across a strange, carnivorous plant, his life changes forever. He names the plant Audrey II, after his secret crush and colleague Audrey – and soon, customers begin to flock to the store. For the first time in his life, Seymour feels seen, heard, and loved. But Audrey II turns out to have a dark side – it feeds on human blood and is constantly hungry for more.
In the role of the timid florist Seymour, we see ÅST’s Samuel Karlsson. Seymour’s secret love and colleague Audrey is played by Saga Sarkola, shop owner Mr Mushnik is portrayed by Jerry Wahlforss, and the man-eating plant Audrey II is given voice and personality by Julia Korander.
The twisted dentist Orin, who also happens to be Audrey’s boyfriend, is played by Peter Kanerva. On stage, there’s also a commenting chorus trio who drives the story forward: Crystal, Chiffon, and Ronnette. These roles are performed by Johanna Kylberg, Amanda Lindgren, and Daniela Franzell.
Also appearing are Heidi Kiviharju, Vera Lillqvist, Kira-Emmi Pohtokari, Ingemar Raukola, and Pontus Simm.
This cult classic musical carries a sharp edge of social satire, exploring how we can be corrupted by the lure of money, greed, and the longing for recognition. Perhaps the most well-known version is the 1986 musical film The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Frank Oz. At Åbo Svenska Teater, it was a crowd favorite when it was staged in 1990.
